MQM to be probed in Pakistan if evidence found: FIA DG

Says characters mentioned in BBC report are in UK; KMC has numerous ghost employees; FIA has presented interim chargesheet against Axact

KARACHI: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Sindh Director General (DG) Shahid Hayat on Saturday said that on receiving evidence, legal procedure would also be initiated against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Pakistan.
He said that the government would launch an investigation into the matter of the BBC report againstmentioned in the BBC report were in United Kingdom (UK).He said that FIA had presented an interim chargesheet against Axact in the court. He challenged that the court should order to reopen Axact accounts if FIA had not followed the standard legal procedure in the case. He said that the FIA was not under pressure from any quarter regarding the ongoing investigation against the Axact. He said that Axact accounts were sealed as per law. He said that these accounts had crime proceeds. He said that FIA had done all on merits. He said if Axact thought that accounts were sealed against the law, the company had a number of lawyers and they could move courts against it and get the accounts opened.
He said there were several ghost employees appointed in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) who were receiving salaries sitting at home while their families were also on the payroll.
Revealing the details, Shahid Hayat said that FIA had arrested nine ghost KMC employees while a corporation senior official was also involved in corruption.He said that KMC had a salary budget of Rs500 million out of which several millions rupees were being paid to the ghost employees.
FIA DG presented a KMC employee, Saleem Khan, who confessed that 21 members of his family were receiving salaries from KMC including his 64-year-old mother-in-law.“It was our duty to collect monthly income from different towns and submit to Director Education Mansoor Mirza who then used to divide the money among high ranking officials,” he confessed.Shahid Hayat said that FIA was also investigating KMC senior officials regarding the matter.
