PESHAWAR: One policeman was killed, six other cops and a civilian were injured when a vehicle of the Quick Response Force of the Peshawar Police was attacked with an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Gulbahar Chowk here on Friday.
A police official said around two kilos of explosives were planted on the roadside in Gulbahar Chowk where a vehicle of the QRF used to be positioned to respond in case of an emergency.The explosion occurred at around 7:40am injuring seven policemen and one civilian. The wounded cops were identified as Rahatullah, Daud, Zulfiqar, Ilyas, Abdul Khaliq, Naik Mohammad and Mohammad Riaz. The civilian couldn’t be identified.
They were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger. Late on Friday, one injured policeman Daud succumbed to his injuries at the LRH. In a separate incident, the police thwarted another sabotage attempt in the city. “We recovered a 16kg bomb and defused it in another action in Sakhi Pul area near Khyber Agency. Four terrorists clad in uniforms were carrying the explosives in an official vehicle and they have been arrested,” SSP Operations Mian Saeed Ahmad told The News.
He added that three of the arrested men were from the Khyber Agency and one was an Afghan national. The SSP operations said four semi-automatic guns were also recovered from the detained men.
