Muttahida hitman Ubaid K2 gets life in prison for killing two cops
An anti-terrorism court handed down the sentence to notorious target killers, Ubaidur Rehman alias Ubaid K2 and Nadir Shah, and also imposed a Rs200,000 fine on each of them.
The convicts had ambushed policemen Muhammad Rehan and Nisar Ahmed near on MA Jinnah Road in 2000 and opened fire at them. Ubaid was subsequently arrested by Sharifabad police and he confessed to killing several cops. He was eventually released in other cases and had gone into hiding before he was arrested again in 2015.
As per the report, Ubaid along with Nadir Shah had ambushed the cops and fired at them. When arrested in 2000, Ubaid had admitted to killing the two police officers. At a hearing before the ATC, an eyewitness had earlier told the court that he had seen the accused killing the two policemen by opening fire at them in front of Ali Raza Imambargah located in the area of Numaish in 2000.
Last year in November, Ubaid was given a 14-year imprisonment sentence in a case pertaining to the possession of illegal arms and explosive material. In that case, the court had also ordered the confiscation of movable and immovable properties owned by him.
Ubaid was arrested on March 11, 2015 in a raid conducted by the Rangers on the then MQM headquarters, Nine Zero, and adjoining areas to arrest a number of MQM workers who were in hiding there.
Ubaid is also said to have confessed to killing several police officers who once had played an important part in the operation during 1990s against MQM. However, he had also been acquitted from some of the murder cases.
The court in its verdict observed that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges of him attacking Pir Shabbir Sarhandi and killing his friend Faheem Farooqui. The prosecution had claimed that Ubaid along with another accused, Sajid Khan, had targeted Sarhandi and his friend Faheem Farooqui in October 2005. Faheem Faroqui was killed in this incident.
But an eyewitness had identified Ubaid as an attacker before a judicial a magistrate. However, the prosecution as a whole failed to present any sound proofs against him and three other MQM workers – Saeed alias Saeed Bharam, Tanveer Chand and Chaudhry Sajjad – were acquitted in the murder case of Niazi and five other policemen.
