The decomposing body of an employee of the University of Karachi (KU) was fished out of the educational institution’s well on Sunday. Police believe the man had committed suicide.

Mobina Town Sub-Inspector Muhammad Ayub told The News that after receiving information about the body, he rushed to the university with a police party. They called in rescue teams for fishing out the deceased from the well.

After completing all the legal formalities, the body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

Police investigation revealed that the deceased was identified as Niaz Ahmed. He was an employee of KU and a resident of F-18, University Quarters, which is situated within the educational institution’s premises. His family had reported him as missing last Monday.

SI Ayub said Ahmed had been suspended over some departmental issues a year ago and, according to the police investigation, he was reinstated some 10 to 15 days back, but the KU administration was causing delays in issuing him his joining letter.

The police official added that the KU employee was also not being disbursed his salary, which had caused him to be quite distressed in the past weeks. “Ahmed’s family claimed that he had attempted to kill himself twice before he went missing.”

The SI said that the man had apparently committed suicide, but the cause of his death would be clarified after completing his medical examination. A case of the incident has been registered and further investigations are under way.
