Low literacy

By our correspondents
March 17, 2017

The problem of low literacy affects Pakistan economically and socially. According to the Human Development Report 2016, only 49.9 percent of the population in Pakistan is literate. The numbers can further be broken down: 33.8 percent of the female population and 47.18 percent of the male population is literate. These figures are not at all flattering.

The government should take serious action to solve this issue. It can arrange workshops for teachers with extended annual plans, updated syllabi and new policies. Education is a basic human right and should be provided to all.
