Tahir appointed Balochistan IGP

PESHAWAR: A senior police officer from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Tahir, has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) Balochistan. He was previously serving as additional inspector general of police (Elite Force) in KP.

The position had been lying vacant since the retirement of Moazzam Jah Ansari last month. Several senior officers were under consideration for the key post in the restive province before the federal government finalised Muhammad Tahir’s appointment.

The new police chief is likely to assume charge on Tuesday as KP Police have arranged farewell for him on Monday. “I will do my best to deliver and improve the law and order situation in the province,” said Muhammad Tahir.

Tahir, an officer of the 26th CTP, was recently promoted to grade 21. Before landing in KP as Ad IGP, he was additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency.

Tahir is a decorated police officer who has served as Joint Director General, Intelligence Bureau (KP & Islamabad), Additional IG Special Branch KP, Additional DG FIA, RPO Mardan and RPO Bannu.

He also remained capital city police officer and SSP Peshawar. Belonging to Charsadda, Tahir was awarded Tamgha-e-Shujaat for leading the 2017 operation against suicide attackers at the Agricultural Training Institute, Peshawar. He also received the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM, 2005).

An alumnus of IBA Karachi (MBA, 1994), he is also a Chevening Scholar (University of Manchester) and a Humphrey Fellow (University of Minnesota). He was recognised as best probationer of his course at the National Police Academy.
