Moot ends with pledge to reshape communication narratives

LAHORE:The ICA 2025 Regional Hub concluded at Forman Christian College University (FCCU) with thought-provoking discussions, international collaborations, and a reaffirmed commitment to reshaping global communication narratives.

According to details, the event, hosted by FCCU’s Department of Mass Communication under the theme of Disrupting and Consolidating Communication Research, was part of the International Communication Association’s (ICA) global network of regional hubs, drawing academic, professional, and student participation from around the world.

The day began with an insightful online presentation by Dr Noshir Contractor from Northwestern University, USA, who discussed the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in Communication Research.

This was followed by a compelling presentation titled ‘Beyond the Headlines: The Role of Research in Modern Journalism’ by Muhammad Junaid. He emphasised the critical need for in-depth media research and the role of ethical journalism in combating populist narratives.

The mid-morning session featured an international virtual presentation by Dr Eda Ozyesilpinar, Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition at Illinois State University, on ‘The Power of Words: How Writing Shapes Communication Research and Practice.’ Her talk inspired participants to consider the deeper role of narrative construction and rhetorical strategy in knowledge production.

A panel discussion followed, titled ‘From Misinformation to Meaningful Conversations: The Role of Research in Fostering Informed Discourse.’ Moderated by Muhammad Junaid, the panel included: Dr Shafiq Ahmad (Punjab University), Dr Savera Shami (Punjab University), Syed Abubakar, journalist and doctoral researcher, George Mason University (USA) and others addressed how misinformation has evolved as a global challenge and explored practical frameworks through which communication research can encourage media literacy, fact-checking, and healthy public debate.

The keynote session of the day was delivered by none other than Dr Arfa Sayeda Zehra, an iconic voice in education, women’s rights, and human dignity in Pakistan. Her address ‘Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges: The Intersection of Communication Research and Human Rights’ resonated deeply with participants, drawing connections between academic responsibility, inclusive narratives, and the fight against oppression. Her speech was met with a standing ovation.

The conference concluded with a dignified closing ceremony, featuring remarks from Dr Firasat Jabeen, Chairperson, Mass Communication (FCCU), Dr Altaf Ullah Khan, Dean of Humanities and Dr Jonathan S. Addleton, Rector, FCCU.
