LAHORE:Prof Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Government College University (GCU) Lahore.

He is the fifth regular Vice Chancellor and the 35th overall head of the historical educational institution established in 1864. The post of regular VC was lying vacant since October 2023 after the four-year tenure of Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi ended in 2023. Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry is a renowned economist with international recognition and expertise in Efficiency & Productivity Analysis and Development Economics. The GCU faculty and staff have warmly welcomed the appointment of an Old Ravian with a distinguished academic background as Vice Chancellor, bringing with him a wealth of experience, scholarly insight, and a deep connection to GCU’s legacy. He holds a PhD and MS from Norway, an MPhil from Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan, and an MA from Government College Lahore—his alma mater to which he now returns as Vice Chancellor.

Prof Omer Chaudhry is currently serving as Professor of Economics at BZU Multan, where he also headed the Institute of Social & Cultural Studies and served as Controller of Examinations and Registrar. His leadership roles at BZU reflect a deep commitment to academic governance and institutional development. Old Ravians also welcomed the appointment of Prof Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry as the new GCU Vice Chancellor.

GCU senior faculty members said Prof Omer, who also studied at GCU Lahore, is deeply immersed in the much cherished Ravian tradition and therefore best qualified to steer his alma mater to the destination where the classic joins hands with the contemporary norms of excellence in academics, research and, above all, nation building.
