ConnectHear launches AI-powered disaster preparedness initiative for deaf community
KARACHI: ConnectHear, a leading assistive technology startup, has launched the ‘AI for Inclusive Disaster Response’ initiative to enhance emergency preparedness for Pakistan’s deaf community. Announced at the Access.Ability.Tech. event in Karachi, the project is supported by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Humanitarian Challenges in partnership with HANDS and Ufone 4G.
With Pakistan among the ten countries most affected by climate-related disasters, the deaf community -- over 10 million strong -- faces critical communication barriers in emergencies. ConnectHear’s AI-driven platform aims to bridge this gap through Early Warning AI (EWAI) alerts and an improved virtual sign language interpretation system, ensuring life-saving information reaches those in need.
Chief Guest Kamran Akbar, senior social development specialist at the World Bank, emphasised, “Inclusive disaster response is a responsibility. ConnectHear’s initiative sets a new standard for accessibility in crisis management.”
Guest of Honour Brigadier Tarique Quadir Lakhair, CEO of SIEHS-1122, added, “AI-driven innovation is transforming emergency response, making it more inclusive for Persons with Disabilities.”
With 1,000 initial beneficiaries, ConnectHear plans to scale this initiative through expanded partnerships, reinforcing disaster resilience for Pakistan’s deaf community.
