A shocking case emerged from the University of Malakand this week, where a professor was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing female students and attempting to abduct one of them. Reports indicate that his mobile phone contained over 4,000 inappropriate videos and images, suggesting a well-organised pattern of exploitation. Disturbingly, there are claims that authorities tried to suppress the case. These incidents underscore an urgent need for universities to implement strict oversight mechanisms over their clerical and academic staff.
Ethical training, clear harassment policies, and a system where students can report misconduct without fear of retaliation should be mandatory. I urge the Higher Education Commission (HEC), university administrations, and government authorities to take decisive action on this issue. A safe and respectful academic environment is a fundamental right of all students, and negligence in this regard will only lead to further erosion of trust in our institutions.
