Nestle unveils biomass boiler to cut emissions
KARACHI: Nestle has inaugurated a biomass boiler at its Kabirwala Factory as part of its Rs2 billion investment in renewable energy and sustainability initiatives, stated a press release on Monday.
Nestle’s Head of Technical for Asia, Oceania and Africa Christian Schmid said that the investment demonstrates the company’s confidence in Pakistan’s potential. He emphasised that the biomass boiler highlights Nestle’s commitment to sustainability and creating shared value for the country.
The boiler will help Pakistan achieve its goal of 60 per cent renewable energy by 2030, reducing around 10,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually -- equivalent to emissions from 2,300 cars. It will also contribute to a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and generate 80,000 tonnes of steam per year, meeting 85 per cent of the factory’s thermal energy needs while saving six million Nm3 of natural gas and 29 tonnes of heavy furnace oil annually.
Nestle Pakistan’s investment plan includes solar power plants and additional biomass boilers across its manufacturing sites. The company aims to cut emissions by 20 per cent by 2025, 50 per cent by 2030, and achieve Net Zero by 2050, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 15.
