LAHORE: The free solar panel scheme aims to provide lasting relief to the public from expensive electricity, said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as she formally inaugurated on Friday the Free Solar Panel Scheme for one lakh consumers in Punjab.
She said, “Punjab’s residents can apply for the scheme via SMS or an online portal starting today. Earlier, 7.3 million consumers in Punjab benefitted from a subsidy of Rs14 per unit. Public resources will now be used exclusively to ensure convenience and relief for the people.”
During the event, the provincial secretary of energy briefed the chief minister on the scheme, saying, “Under the programme, 100,000 solar systems will be installed over a year. These systems will be provided free of cost to electricity consumers who use up to 200 units per month.
The chief minister was informed that 55,019 consumers who consume up to 100 units per month will receive free 550-watt solar systems, while those consuming between 101 and 200 units will receive 1,100-watt solar systems at no cost. Registration for the scheme can be done through the online portal cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk or by sending an SMS to 8800.
She was also briefed that verification would be conducted using the reference number and CNIC mentioned on the monthly electricity bills. A computerised ballot will ensure transparency in the allocation process. Additionally, a helpline will be established to guide and support eligible consumers.
To enhance security, the solar panels and inverters will be linked to the CNIC of the consumer to prevent theft. The scheme is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tons and lessen the subsidy burden on the federal government.
