Ex-MPA, several nursing students injured in Lyari attack
A former member of the provincial assembly was among over half of a dozen others wounded after unknown persons attacked the nursing students outside the Lyari General Hospital on Monday.
The nursing students of the Lyari General Hospital were staging a protest against the involvement of non-student elements and the appointment of former principal Shabana Baloch when they came under attack.
The attack, involving stone-pelting, left several students injured, and one student was reportedly stabbed. Jamaat-e-Islami leader for District South and former MPA Syed Abdul Rasheed was also injured while showing solidarity with the protesting students. The students had been protesting for months against the involvement of non-student elements and the appointment of the former principal. Following the attack, the students protested outside the Chakiwara Police Station, demanding the arrest of those involved.
They had previously protested several times against the appointment of the former principal but to no avail. The protest escalated when the police used batons to disperse the crowd, arresting several students. In a video after the attack, Syed Abdul Rasheed accused Uzair Baloch, Anjum Rehman and the principal of orchestrating the attack. In response, Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Muhammad Farooq contacted Home Minister Zia Lanjar and informed him of the attack on Abdul Rasheed. A report on the incident has been sought from the relevant police officers.
