The frontrunners who could replace Keir Starmer as party leader and British prime minister
Other names linked to a potential leadership race include Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband
Pressure is continuing to mount on Keir Starmer as senior Labour figures emerge as possible contenders to replace him as party leader and British prime minister.
Although nearly 100 Labour MPs have publicly urged Starmer to resign following the party’s election losses, no formal leadership challenge has yet been launched.
Under Labour Party rules, a challenger must secure support from at least 81 MPs before a leadership contest can begin.
Among the leading names being discussed is Wes Streeting, who has gained attention for his plans to reform the National Health Service and his reputation as one of Labour’s strongest communicators.
Andy Burnham is also seen as a major contender. Burnham remains popular among Labour supporters but currently faces difficulties because he is not a sitting MP.
Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner is another possible candidate, as she has built support among younger voters and trade union members through housing reforms and workers’ rights policies.
Other names linked to a potential leadership race include Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, a former Labour leader.
