KARACHI: After six years of inquiry, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Karachi has closed its investigation into allegations against an officer of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) about the possession of properties beyond his known sources of income.

The inquiry, initiated in response to a written complaint filed in February 2018, alleged corruption and unauthorized accumulation of assets by Makhdoom Muneer Siddiqi, an officer at FBR, Hyderabad. The complaint, filed by Siddiqi’s cousin Makhdoom Ashfaq Siddiqi, was also submitted to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) simultaneously.

While the FIA after investigating the issue cleared Siddiqi of any wrongdoing, NAB Karachi continued its investigation, repeatedly summoning Siddiqi.

However, NAB closed the inquiry at its end due to lack of jurisdiction and the case was referred to the FIA and FBR for further action.

A ‘complaint verification’ process was initiated in February 2018, which should have been concluded within the period of six months in either way as per NAB laws.

Makhdoom Muneer Siddiqi alleged that the accusations stem from a longstanding property dispute with his close relative, a senior NAB officer, who misused his authority to settle personal grudges and managed compliant against him using his cousin.

The reporter approached Director General NAB, Karachi, Javed Akbar Riaz, Director and Spokesman of NAB Karachi Javed Misrani and Director NAB Karachi Hafeez Siddiqi for their versions through phone calls and WhatsApp messages but could not get any response.
