This week You! takes a look at the Pantone colour of the year ‘Living Coral’ and how you can incorporate it in your wardrobe and makeup...

Every year there is a hue that rules the fashion scene. Fashion enthusiasts’ and beauty gurus eagerly look forward to what ‘global colour authority’ Pantone will dub as the ‘Colour of the Year’, as it will majorly influence a lot of trends in the industry. For 2019, we have the stunning shade called ‘Living Coral’. According to Pantone Color Institute, “Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energising aspects of colour found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerises the eye and mind. Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.”

Unlike last year’s ultra violet election, this year’s coral hue is so much more wearable when it comes to beauty. Read on to find out how you can include this beautiful shade in your closet and makeup...

Living for the coral makeup

First off, let’s start with makeup. While most colours are tricky to incorporate in your daily casuals or a formal look, this year’s Living Coral is a shade practically made for makeup. This hue looks stunning on your eyes, on cheeks it adds a flush of warmth, on nails a pop of colour and on lips a bold alternative to the classic red. Even if you are wearing a plain monochrome outfit, Living Coral in your makeup will instantly add some vibrancy to your look; and that too effortlessly!

For the eyes, use neutral peachy transition shades on your lid to have a nice base and build up your favourite coral colour in the crease. You can keep it subtle by using matte shades and finish off with a winged liner. But, if you want to go bolder, add in some shimmery coral hue on your lid with a cat eye. You can find these perfect shades for your eyes in Huda Beauty Obsessions Eye Shadow Palette or Too Faced Just Peachy Velvet Matte Eyeshadow Palette as they offer a spectrum of buttery cream transition shades, bold and muted peach and corals, and rich brown and burgundy shades to add dimension.

To really let your cheeks do the talking, avoid using the colour elsewhere on your face. Go for a dewy foundation, a sweep of black liner on the upper lids, black mascara and don’t forget to define your eyebrows. Apply your favourite coral blush and skip the eye shadow and contouring. Our recommendation for blush is Nyx Professional Makeup High Definition Blush in Double Dare or a liquid blush by Nars in Torri.

For some nice lippie choices, we have Charlotte Tilbury’s Sexy Sienna, Barbarella by Nars and L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Shine Lipstick in Luminous Coral.

Here is a pro-tip: Fair skin types should stick with the softer corals and peaches, whereas olive and medium skin tones on the other hand can really get away with any shade of coral makeup.

Coral your wardrobe

For anyone in any doubt, Living coral is said to be a pink-orange coral shade but with golden undertones, giving it a warmth and depth compared to cooler coral colours. As clashing colours still reign, it’s a good shade to pair with fuchsia and deeper purple colours. However, if clashing seems a daunting prospect, it’s also a great colour to turn into a head-to-toe tonal look like Gigi Hadid’s bright jumpsuit. Also, you can find pastel versions of the shade to mix with the more vivid living coral staples for your outfit. For a semi-casual look, don a cream-coloured or black monotone dress or kurta, and a gorgeous coral jacket like the one from Boheme by Kanwal’s ‘Kathputhli Tamasha’ collection.

Since we are still in the midst of wedding season, you can have some nice and dazzling additions to your formal collection. You can draw inspiration from The Pink Tree Company’ ‘Gulabi Gang’ collection for FPW, which features a range of pink hues mixed with corals.

Accessorise & accentuate

If you are not willing to full-on embrace this hue, try incorporating some accessories, like shoes, bag or sunglasses into a casual, everyday look. All you have to do is find the right pieces and voila, you can sneak the trendy colour into any outfit. Because it is still winter, you can make this colour play of pink-orange overtones and golden undertones to your advantage by using them in soft fabrics or heavy knits. It can lend softness or a casual effect to a sleek, streamlined look. Try adorning amazing shawls and knit items like scarves and cardigans to add some oomph to your attire.

For some pretty trinkets, grab a pendant or a beaded necklace, if you’re feeling extra. You’ll find a variety of gorgeous jewellery pieces from neck pieces to earrings which will add subtle touches of the colour trend to your neutral ensemble. Another great way to embrace this shade is with a handbag. Bright coral shades in handbags were all the rage last year and it seems like this trend will persevere this time around as well.
