The mindless exploitation of natural resources by mankind has imperilled the existence of the planet itself. Increasing pollution, our poisoned rivers, an unstable ocean, the melting glaciers are all aggravated by human thoughtlessness. To save environment, it is important to take a strong initiative.

Tree plantation is a harbinger of prosperity. Plants eliminate the pollution and are beneficial for the health, too. This would let our coming generations lead a healthy life. Fortunately, many people, including renowned companies on a larger scale, are taking part in introducing tree plantation drives. Most of them are also collaborating with each other to form movements which will help in saving mother Earth.

Following the same vein, Fashion Pakistan’s ‘Sew. Reap. Repeat’ campaign in collaboration with Kiran Foundation came to a successful close recently in Karachi. Leading hair care brand Sunsilk also joined hands with Fashion Pakistan and Kiran Foundation for this green initiative. At the tree plantation drive, the last of the 100 gulmohar trees pledged, were planted in the heart of Lyari by Mahira Miyanji, a Lyari native who is working to educate the girls of Lyari free of charge through her education centre. Mahira is the recipient of many accolades for her social work and has been nominated for a N- Peace Award by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for her efforts.

Prominent personalities present at the closing ceremony included Founder of Kiran Foundation; Sabina Khatri, CEO of Fashion Pakistan Council; Feri Rewanian, Chairman of Fashion Pakistan Council; Deepak Perwani, PPP Senator; Sherry Rehman, Brand Manager Sunsilk; Rabia Aftab. The plantation drive was made all the more special with members of the local community present at this occasion.

Through this campaign, the trees were planted in different phases, taking a step towards achieving a greener and cleaner city. “Every tree that we have planted reminds me of my children of Lyari. May the children and the trees give shadow and peace to the community of Lyari,” said Sabina Khatri.

According to Feri Rewanian, “Through this initiative, we aimed at pitching in and doing our part towards a greener Karachi. I am thrilled that we, in collaboration with the foundation and Sunsilk along with Tofiq Pasha Mooraj have fulfilled our pledge of planting 100 glorious gulmohar trees in memory of the great humanitarian, Abdul Sattar Edhi. Here’s hoping this will be the first of many more social initiatives on our part.”

The tree plantation drive is expected to be the first of many to bring key stakeholders together for the better weather and environment cause. The residents of Lyari and especially the children of that area fully participated in the planting of the trees down the main Lyari road teeming with shopkeepers. Each shopkeeper is now a tree adopter, in charge of the tree in front of his shop. This sustainable campaign is expected to bring a good environmental change. Kudos to the team!
