Entrepreneurship is regarded as the key factor of economic prosperity of any country. It is defined as the capacity and willingness to start a new business venture and the hallmark of entrepreneurial spirit is innovation and risk taking. Few countries such as USA, Japan, Denmark, Germany and Taiwan are quintessential of the role that entrepreneurship can play in the economic development of a country and, therefore, are role models for other nations aspiring to achieve self-sustained growth in the ever increasing competitive global market.

To promote entrepreneurship, it is important that the people with innovative ideas and skills have access to the vital entrepreneurial resources like money, talent and know-how to initiate new business, especially small and medium size enterprises. For such purpose, Shell Tameer Awards are organized from time to time to recognize and reward the entrepreneurial creativity and talent of young Pakistani entrepreneurs while providing them a platform to further their business ideas. Recently, the awards took place at the British Deputy High Commission, Karachi, to honour the brightest business ideas. Since its inception in 2003, through the Tameer platform, over 1000 businesses have been setup, 12,000 aspiring entrepreneurs have been trained and over 800,000+ youngsters have been engaged on enterprise development to date.

The event was attended by prominent industry and business leaders as well as young entrepreneurs of the country. The jury comprising established professionals judged the top 12 finalists in four categories. During the event, Jawwad Cheema, Managing Director, Shell Pakistan Limited said, “These awards are a fundamental part of our enterprise generation efforts in Pakistan, providing young Pakistani talent with a platform that highlights their achievement and elevates them as role models to spark socio-economic progress and change. If we hope to provide youth with meaningful career options, we must continue to create such opportunities for them to shine - and I congratulate our winners here today on their incredible achievements.”

As far as the UK’s support for such initiatives that provide livelihoods and work towards the country’s economic development and progress is concerned, British Deputy High Commissioner, Belinda Lewis, stated, “The British Deputy High Commission is a strong supporter of entrepreneurship initiatives. I commend the company for its leadership role in raising corporate social responsibility standards in Pakistan and urge and encourage other private sector companies to follow this exemplary model.”

We hope that in the future more of such initiatives take place to honour and recognise young entrepreneurs.
