Following the global observance of World Thalassemia Day on May 8, Sada Welfare Foundation, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Karachi New Central, National Institute of Child Health (NICH), and the Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA), hosted a successful Thalassemia Awareness Seminar at NICH. The event aimed to educate the community on thalassemia, promote early screening, and discuss prevention strategies.

The seminar began with the recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by welcome speeches from Dr Nasir Saleem Sadal, Executive Director of NICH, and Shanaz Ramzi, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Karachi New Central. Both emphasised the need for collaboration in addressing the challenges faced by thalassemia patients.

The keynote address by Dr Saqib Ansari, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Physician, highlighted the importance of genetic counselling, early screening, and public education in combating thalassemia. He encouraged premarital screening and better awareness to reduce the spread of the disorder.

A panel discussion featuring medical experts Prof. Zeenat Issani, Prof. Iqbal Memon, Prof. Najma Patel, and Prof. Mohsina Noor Ibrahim followed, addressing the medical and social barriers to effective thalassemia care. The session ended with a brief Q&A, giving the audience a chance to engage directly with the experts.

Fawzia Siddiqui, Chairperson of Sada Welfare Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting thalassemia children with free blood donations and financial assistance to NICH.

Advisor to the Governor of Sindh, Muzammil Ather, expressed his support for the cause and announced financial aid covering 50 per cent of NICH’s operational costs. His gesture was welcomed by all attendees.

The event concluded with gifts for thalassemia children and shields presented to guests and panellists. Dr Talat Rizvi and Prof. Mohsina Ibrahim delivered the closing remarks, emphasising the need for sustained community support and awareness in the fight against thalassemia.
