Hi Ed,

I am a new, ‘old’ reader. I had seen Us many times, but never got around to reading it because its appearance did not attract me. However, when I was stuck at the waiting lounge of the airport, I decided to pass time by reading something and somehow randomly found myself reading Us on the website of The News. I am 31 years of age, and an HR professional, so the article ‘Landing your job interview’ by Jawwad Ahmed (November 1) caught my fancy. It was a very decent article and after reading that I read other stuff in the issue as well. I have become a fan of the young poets who write beautiful and meaningful poetry. Also, the stories are interesting, too, although a bit kiddish for me.

In the present scenario where unemployment is rampant, I suggest you concentrate on motivating the young people to take up skills suited to them to earn their livelihood because employment situation is going to become grimmer still. There are very few vocational training centres and we need a lot more schools to impart technical skills to our young generation. I sincerely hope our government realises it and starts training the youth to avert economic disaster I envisage. You can contribute by publishing articles on various skills young people can take up.

Dear Ed,

I’ve noticed Us magazine has been running a lot of stories on art. Sameen Amer’s piece on the Inktober challenge was an interesting read.

However, social media challenges are just another way of encouraging young people to use social media. No matter how mindful you are while using Facebook or Instagram, you will end up wasting time because there are so many distractions.

Hey Eddy,

By reading the article Inktober (Lite) - a month of drawing (badly), I get this idea that drawing does not have to be fancy. You can just make simple, easy drawings and enjoy the process of creating art. But I have an issue here: the art tools Sameen Amer mentioned in her tips section are expensive and not easily available at local stationary shops. While reading the piece, I was expecting that the writer would simply suggest to use any simple pen lying around the house.

Reflection

Narrated by Abu Bakra (R.A)

Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) said thrice, ‘Shall I not inform you of the biggest of the great sins?’ We said, ‘Yes, O Allah’s Apostle.’ He said, ‘To join partners in worship with Allah: to be undutiful to one’s parents.’ The Prophet sat up after he had been reclining and added, ‘And I warn you against giving forged statement and a false witness; I warn you against giving a forged statement and a false witness.’ The Prophet kept on saying that warning till we thought that he would not stop.
