EID GALORE

Originally, I sat down to pen down a typical day of Eid in a Pakistani’s life; however, with the passage of time, we certainly see that although similar, there are a few things we have begun to do a bit differently. Once done with Eid prayers and mandatory greetings, we all perceive this occasion according to our needs, environment, and relatives and of course weather. Let’s see which category you fall into. Well most of us are a mix of these.

The ever sleep-deprived

As soon as they are back from prayers (boys), they will unmistakably and meticulously slip out of their neatly pressed shalwar qameez, hang it carefully for later events and will go back to their beloved sleep, resuming their sweet dreams from where they had left in the morning. It’s all peace and serenity for them. Shhh...They’re still sleeping, keep it low! Oh and if someone comes to meet them, you have to shout at the top of your lungs to jolt them out of the reverie.

It’s all upon ‘the diligent mothers’

Up, up and awake, if not for these beautiful creatures, hard work would have been an unknown concept. Since Fajr, they are on their duty to patrol the entire house, waking everyone to take shower and commence the day. Then they direct themselves towards kitchen where they prepare the traditional sweet dishes (kheer, sheer khorma, seviyaan, and firni) to serve the family when they come back from prayers. The cooking does not ends here! Where do you think the delectable and enticing biryani, quorma and pulao comes from for the grand lunch? And oh, wait, fruit trifles, custards, ice cream desserts, nope... we are not leaving without them, are we? The entire house is upon these doting ladies and their hospitality.

The fashion brigade

Let’s talk about the beauties who turn up to be absolutely stunning for this day. From beautiful hair-dos to perky lipstick colours and glowing faces, they start their day? They don a traditional look: intricate and jeweled shirts complemented with decorated dupattas and glistening ornaments. Now, who’s up for their mandatory photo-shoot (read: fake candids) with the caption ‘Eid 2k18’ and a million pouts?

The eidi mafia

These little cuties are going to look into your eyes and ask you for their treasured ‘eidi’. You take out the crisp bundle of fresh currency notes and hand over the shares to the tiny monsters who fetch it with a dash of lightening and voila...! Where’s that tuck shop again? There’s few of them who would not even let their mothers sniff the eidi because, according to them, once the eidi is with their mothers, they never get it back! Well you cannot always believe them puppy dog eyes, of having so much native wisdom, can you?

The ‘party poppers’

Where to? Answer: so and so movie, so and so cafe, so and so restaurant. It’s just them and their friends and a night out. The activities might range from sleepless-sleepovers to movie nights to BBQ parties to one-wheeling thrills. One of the reasons they sleep in the day is to reenergize their souls for exciting evenings. “Maa, don’t wait for me, I’ll be late.”
