Feedback

Hi Editor,

Thank you, Us magazine, for another brilliant issue. I have just spent a lovely afternoon reading the March 9 issue!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the cover story “In the wondrous Lanka”.

In the context of mosques being destroyed and burnt and Buddhist-Muslim tensions in Sri-Lanka, the writer’s comment sounds ironic. According to the writer, the tolerance in Lanka was something to be awed at. He wrote, “Mosques and monasteries blend along the same road in Kandy with no friction.” I think experiences vary from person to person. Tourists only want to focus on the picturesque side of their travel destination. They aren’t shown the ugly side; they are treated well!

The piece was an amusing read! I wish the print quality of your magazine was better so that I could cut out the pictures of Sri-Lanka for keeping in my journal.

Pakistan Day

“It is extremely difficult to appreciate why our Hindu friends fail to understand the real nature of Islam and Hinduism. They are not religions in the strict sense of the word, but are, in fact, different and distinct social orders, and it is a dream that the Hindus and Muslims can ever evolve a common nationality, and this misconception of one Indian nation has gone far beyond the limits and is the cause of most of our troubles and will lead India to destruction if we fail to revise our notions in time. The Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, social customs, and literatures. They neither intermarry nor interdine together and, indeed, they belong to two different civilisations which are based mainly on conflicting ideas and conceptions. Their aspects on life, and of life, are different. It is quite clear that Hindus and Mussalmans derive their inspiration from different sources of history. They have different epics, their heroes are different, and different episodes. Very often the hero of one is a foe of the other, and likewise, their victories and defeats overlap. To yoke together two such nations under a single state, one as a numerical minority and the other as a majority, must lead to growing discontent, and final destruction of any fabric that may be so built up for the government of such a state.

“Do you realise how big and stupendous it is? Do you realise that you cannot get freedom or independence by mere arguments ... I may tell you that unless you get this into your blood, unless you are prepared to take off your coats and are willing to sacrifice all that you can and work selflessly, earnestly, and sincerely for your people, you will never realise your aim. Friends, I therefore want you to make up your mind definitely, and then think of devices and organise your people, strengthen your organisation, and consolidate the Mussalmans all over India. I think that the masses are wide awake. They only want your guidance and your lead. Come forward as servants of Islam; organise the people economically, socially, educationally, and politically, and I am sure that you will be a power that will be accepted by everybody.”

HAPPENINGS

A ray of hope

Festival of Lights, a fundraising event, was organized by Dawood Public School (DPS). The fun-filled festival aimed to generate funds that would help the patients of Bait-ul-Sukoon Cancer Hospital.

While expressing her view a teacher said, “All the efforts were put into this huge event because DPS has always believed in teaching values of charity and sacrifice deep into the personalities of its students so that they can become not only successful, but also empathetic, passionate and concerned members of the society driven to actually ‘do’ and ‘make a difference’. Having students take the lead in setting up activities and stalls enables them to rise up to their potential and build upon essential life skills.”

Mrs. Fatima (a parent) said, “We are so proud that our daughter was a part of this charity event.” Yet another visitor said that he was inspired by the entire festival and then promptly made his way to the Blood Donation Drive that had been set up by the Indus Hospital to do his part.

First timers’ corner

Hi Eddy,

This is the first time that I’m writing to you guys. The travel article on Sri-Lanka was a fun piece. Oscar quiz was also fun. Though I am a movie buff, I scored 2 in the quiz.

Just wanted to share a thought; I don’t think Oscars are awarded fairly, like the movie The Shape of Water is just another typical movie. By the way, it was very much like Beauty and the Beast and Strange Magic.

Looking forward to more quizzes.
