Feedback

Dear Ed,

“Exploring the world of dentistry” was a most interesting read. As a BDS student, I was thrilled because finally BDS is being recognized for its worth. My siblings and cousins are MBBS doctors and my family members are like I should have worked a little harder to make it to med school. I have tried to explain time and again that I always wanted to be a dentist, but they think I did not get the required grades. Anyway, the interview of Dr Farhan Raza Khan, Head of Dental Section, Aga Khan University & Hospital was a treat! I am sure that people will finally accept that dentistry is no less than medicine. And every bit as essential!

“Stay warm and stylish!” by Fatima Noor (November 3) was a good cover story! Fashion is an important part of our lives and I am glad you published something on it! Good going! Also, reading the name of NJV in the same issue brought back memories. It was my centre when I appeared for SSC examination some years back. And boy, the cheating I saw being done there still gives me nightmares! But there is no denying that it’s a beautiful building. “Karachi spectacular” by SZ also moved me, as I love this city to bits. Keep up the good work!

First timers’ corner

Hello Ed,

This is my first ever letter to Us and I hope it gets published. I have been reading Us magazine regularly for three years now. I must say that it’s the best magazine for the youth and you guys have done a good job of making it relevant for your target readership.

Ed, I would love to contribute to the “Poets Corner” of your magazine. Please explain in detail the process for sending my poems. Also, let me know if you have a word limit for poems and articles.

Sidra Mustafa, Islamabad

You can send your poems at uspoetscorneratgmail.com. There is no word limit as such for poems, but they shouldn’t be too long. For articles, 550 to 650 words is the limit for a one-pager.

Story writing competition

Hi Ed,

Thank you for extending the date for submission of stories for the story writing competition but let me tell you it’s not enough for those of us who have projects to submit in December. I think you should announce the date sometime in June, so all those who wish to compete may write at their own leisure.

An old reader remenbers

Hi Ed,

I am an old reader and what I miss in Us now is the vibrant debates on articles, stories and even letters we used to have. Are people too busy, or have they become indifferent?  I know most students have loads of pressure, but we all need time for mental relaxation, and what better way than to comment on issues we, the youth, are facing nowadays? I remember an old segment where a topic was given and people were asked to write for and against. If I remember correctly, the word count was 250-300 words, and I wrote in favour of “Pink is king”. Good old times! Can we have that section back, please?

US MAILReflection

Narrated by Abdullah (R.A.)

The Prophet (S.A.W) drew a square and then drew a line in the middle of it and let it extend outside the square and then drew several small lines attached to that central line, and said, “This is the human being, and this [the square], in his lease of life, encircles him from all sides [or has encircles him], and this [line], which is outside [the square], is his hope, and these small lines are the calamities and troubles [which may befall him], and if one misses him, another will snap [i.e. overtake] him, and if the other misses him, a third will snap [i.e. overtake] him.”
