Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s warrior romance Bajirao Mastani, based on the life of Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao, may not be historically accurate but that little fact didn’t keep the film from sweeping the Filmfare Awards 2016.

Rekha, a regular presenter at Filmfare over the years, cheered for Ranveer with the popular Har Har Mahadev dialogue from Bajirao Mastani as she presented him withthe trophy. Ranveer's first win as best actor brought out his sober side as he touched Deepika's parents feet before heading to stage. In his acceptance speech, Ranveer expressed gratitude for his sister and said. "Thank you for being my second mother." Deepika Padukone is no stranger to awards but the best actress nod brought out her emotional side as the actress broke into tears and read out a letter that her father had addressed to her and dedicated her victory to her parents. "I dedicate the award to my parents. Thank you Shoojit sir." When her win was announced, the actor hugged her Piku co-star Amitabh Bachchan and yes, a hug to Ranveer Singh also followed.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s warrior romance Bajirao Mastani, based on the life of Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao, may not be historically accurate but that little fact didn’t keep the film from sweeping the Filmfare Awards 2016.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan Salman Khan didn’t win a thing but that doesn’t take away from his peppy performance. Dressed in all black, Salman sang the number ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ before performing to a medley of his popular songs.

Bajirao Mastani picked up nine awards on Friday night at a star-studded ceremony, held at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Mumbai, which also saw performances from the likes of Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. In attendance were some of Bollywood’s young guns like Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor and many others.

Shah Rukh Khan was one of the hosts for the evening and as always, SRK turned the charm on as he also shook a leg with Madhuri Dixit, and joked around with co-hosts Kapil Sharma and filmmaker Karan Johar.

Big B prevails: Amitabh Bachchan picked up the trophy for best actor (critics) for his performance in Piku. He received the award from Madhuri Dixit, who set the stage alive with her performance with King of romance, Shah Rukh Khan.

As far as the awards are concerned, only two films mattered: Bajirao Mastani and Piku. In major categories like best film, best actor, best director and best supporting actor, Bajirao Mastani triumphed over fan favourite Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the gritty Talvar.

The other big film of the night turned out to be Shoojit Sircar’s Piku which fetched Deepika Padukone the best actor trophy in popular category while Amitabh Bachchan bagged best actor trophy in critics segment. Critics choice for best film also went to Piku. In total, the film bagged five awards.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns also bagged a few awards including critics choice award in the best actor (female) category for Kangana Ranaut. The film also bagged the award for best dialogue.

Pakistan’s Atif Aslam, who bagged his fourth nomination in the best playback singer male category for the song ‘Jeena Jeena’ off the film Badlapur lost to Arijit Singh who won for his rendition of ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’ from Roy. Roy also won the best music award ahead of A.R. Rahman’s Tamasha.

Shah Rukh Khan turned on the charm as host and his infectious energy was felt throughout the night as the actor shook a leg with Madhuri Dixit and brought his self-deprecating humour center stage. SRK’s Dilwale won absolutely nothing but the actor was in good spirit as he joked around with other stars and looked dapper while doing so.

From Pakistan, Fawad Khan who picked up a trophy at Filmfare last year also attended the ceremony with wife Sadaf. Speaking on the red carpet, the actor was quoted saying: “I received one (Filmfare trophy) last year and being here this year, I think has been an amazing journey. I love the whole Filmfare family and am glad to be here.”

In performances, several stars took to stage besides Salman and Shah Rukh. Alia Bhatt danced to songs from Shandaar and Mahesh Bhatt’s films while Dilwale star Kriti Sanon paid tribute to late actress Sadhana and danced to her tunes.

Best Actor winner Ranveer Singh paid tribute to Yash Raj Films’ Aditya Chopra as he danced to a medley of songs from his directorial ventures like Dilwale Dulhaniya Lay Jayenge, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Mohabbatein.
