Instep gives you the lowdown on drama serials that have been consistently topping the ratings chart

A series of new drama serials from Geo TV that went on air in the last couple of months – and are exploring various genres and themes – have been noticed by the audience.

While some of them are tackling important social issues (Ruswai, Ishq Zah e Naseeb), others are serving as moral commentaries (Bewafa, Mere Paas Tum Ho). However, there are some that strictly don’t fall under any of the aforementioned categories but are making an impact with each episode and are generating high ratings. Instep takes a look…

Alif

*ing: Manzar Sehbai, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Sajal Aly

Alif, starring Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sajal Aly, finally went on air last month – after a long wait – and since its launch has viewers hooked to the serial. Sajal, as a struggling actress Momina Sultan, and Hamza, as a leading filmmaker Qalb e Momin, are making waves with their powerful performances.

In the latest episode that went on air last weekend, the plot sees a twist of sorts as Momina finds hope after signing a contract for a Hollywood movie while Momin is shaken by the words of his grandfather, essayed by the incredible Manzar Sehbai. However, Momina’s happiness doesn’t last for too long as she is shattered by the loss of her younger brother.

Recalling what his grandfather said when he visited him last, Momin begins to ponder and makes a call to the former justifying how content he is with his life. To Momin’s surprise, his grandfather leaves him with another thought during their conversation that moves him. When Momin says, “You can’t change how I approach life,” his grandfather replies, “But your Creator can!”

Whether Momin ignores the statement or digs deeper into it is yet to be seen. Meanwhile he is gearing up for the press conference of his next film that is likely to expose some people around him. Momina, on the other hand, might find some direction and luck in life after having signed on for an international project. Let’s wait and watch.

Kahin Deep Jalay

*ing: Imran Ashraf, Neelam Muneer

Starring Imran Ashraf in a completely different light compared to some of his recent, unconventional roles (Bhola, Rehan Chaudhry), Kahin Deep Jalay is another drama that is presently on air and has audiences intrigued.

Five episodes into the drama, the plot revolves around the life of Zeeshan, played by Imran Ashraf, and Rida, essayed by Neelam Muneer.

Zeeshan is shown as a sensitive and calm young man, who was leading a happy and privileged life until his father passed away, leaving him and his mother (essayed by Saba Hamid) alone to face society’s cruelty and lack of compassion.

Rida, on the other hand, has three loving brothers and a mother who can go to any extent for her happiness. However, her sister in law to be isn’t fond of her and is envious of the love her family bestows on her. In the last episode, we learn that Rida’s family is concerned about some guy who is threatening them via inappropriate messages targeting Rida. Let’s see if they manage to find out who that person/s is in tonight’s episode.

Ramz e Ishq

*ing: Mikaal Zulfiqar, Hiba Bukhari, Kiran Haq, Gohar Rasheed

Ramz e Ishq that stars Mikaal Zulfiqar and Hiba Bukhari in pivotal roles is essentially a love story but also highlights family politics and conflicts within. In the recent episode, Rayaan (Mikaal) agrees to marry his cousin, Rania (Kiran Haq) after his father forces him to, even though he loves Roshni (Hiba) who recently got divorced from her husband (Gohar Rasheed). Roshni was also pressurized to marry her ex-husband in the name of family honour. While Rayaan had reasons to give in, we feel he has some plan in mind to get rid of Rania and marry Roshni instead. We’ll have to wait and see until the next few episodes air.

Dil e Gumshuda

*ing: Amar Khan, Hina Altaf, Agha Ali, Zain Baig

Amar Khan’s most recent drama, Dil e Gumshuda, for which she is generating positive reviews, has a twisted storyline. Amar essays a headstrong, stubborn young woman Alizey, while the drama also features Hina Altaf, Agha Ali and Zain Baig in prominent roles. Alizey gets her cousin Zara (Hina), who lives with them, married to her ex-fiance Daniyal (Agha) but later regrets losing him. When she finds out that Zara and Daniyal are leading a happy married life, she conspires against them and the couple ends up having a fight. Daniyal demeans Zara, doubts her loyalty and asks her to leave his house. Alizey, who was waiting to see the outcome of her tactics, is happy to see Zara back home.

Whether this clash strengthens further or Zara and Daniyal get back together is yet to be seen. The drama airs from Monday till Friday at 9pm on Geo Entertainment.
