The much talked about series, Game of Thrones (GoT) concluded its eight-season run in May with the Battle of Winterfall now over. A global phenomenon, winning multiple Emmys, Game of Thrones was originally adapted from the G.G. Martin books.

Recent reports suggest that a GoT prequel is in the works and that the shooting, which is set thousands of years before the events of the original show – has begun in Ireland.

“The shooting location is a familiar one: Northern Ireland, which served as the production of hub for GoT during its entire run. It’s not yet clear if the prequel will also shoot in other countries as well,” reported Entertainment Weekly.

However, HBO has not confirmed any such news.

In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, author and co-creator George R.R. Martin shared, “Westeros is a very different place” in the prequel, compared to the Westeros fans are familiar with from Game of Thrones. “There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens – Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series,” he added.

According to HBO’s official description, the series from creators George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman, “chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

While HBO has not yet confirmed an official title for the series, Martin said last year that it will be called The Long Night. Winter is coming will not be the title of the prequel and so far Naomi Watts has been tapped for a principal role.
