Aurat Haq will have an open discussion on #MeToo tomorrow

Karachi-based cross-class, diverse political group, Aurat Haq was formed earlier this year in June 2018 post Aurat March – a revolutionary event in the history of Pakistan. The group had their first event last month in which they invited Marxist Noor Zaheer, who spoke about women’s struggles in South Asia and the relevance of #MeToo in the region.

Though #MeToo never really turned into a movement in Pakistan, it has received all sorts of reactions from both men and women, and has resulted in backlash for those who have spoken out. Realizing this, Aurat Haq has organized a discussion on the subject on December 16, that is, Sunday at Jamshed Memorial Montessori School in Karachi.

Scheduled to commence around 4 in the evening, the event aims to have an open discussion on the “politics of naming and shaming” and the importance of speaking up against harassment.

The event page of Facebook states, “We believe that we can have an open, respectful discussion on this important issue and encourage women to come out and speak their minds, while men come and listen.”

Given people’s insensitivity and ignorance towards important issues such as these, we feel it is important to have platforms through which some awareness can be created.
