People’s Choice Awards 2018: The nominations are out and the fans have spoken

Grey’s Anatomy is leading the pack with five nominations, unlike the recently concluded Emmys where the show was snubbed again this year.

The People’s Choice Awards (PCA) 2018 nominations are here and the results are significantly different than other prominent ceremonies such as The Emmys or even The Golden Globes.

In the television category, fan-favorite Grey’s Anatomy is leading the pack with five nominations. Grey’s Anatomy is starting its 15th season this fall and while it’s a fan-favorite with outstanding ratings, it hasn’t been nominated at The Emmys – considered television’s biggest night – in years. And yet, with the PCA, it gets nominated, every year. It has been nominated in the category of both Show of 2018 and Drama of 2018 as well as in the categories of Male TV Star of 2018 (for Justin Chambers) and Female TV Star of 2018 (for Ellen Pompeo).

It showcases a great discrepancy between what the television industry and the press nominates and ultimately votes for and what the public hopes to validate with its votes, seen at the PCAs.

Other nominations for Show of 2018 include This Is Us, Big Bang Theory, 13 Reasons Why and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

In the comedy category, slapstick comedies like Modern Family and Big Bang Theory have picked up nods, while the big winner at the Emmy’s in comedy section, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, wasn’t even nominated. This goes to show the major difference between what most fans consider best television versus what critics, the press and industry insiders do.

In the Male TV Star category, lead actors of The Walking Dead, Riverdale, and Grey’s Anatomy lead the pack.

In the Female TV Star category, Ellen Pompeo – who surprisingly has never won a solo Emmy for her outstanding portrayal of Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy – is nominated here once again. Two years ago, almost 500 million fans from all over the world voted for the PCA’s and it was Ellen Pompeo and Grey’s Anatomy that took home the top honors.

Other nominees in this category include the exceptional Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Mandy Moore (This Is Us), and Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters: The Moral Instruments).

In the Drama TV Star of 2018, most deserving Mariska Harigitay of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit has been nominated for portraying the character of incomparable Olivia Benson. The show has been running for 20 seasons and in the last few years, it has been completely overhauled, making it an almost different show. Like many snubs, it has been ignored by the Emmys as well and certainly deserves the top honors.

Other nominees in this category include Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: ACS), Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), KJ Apa (Riverdale) and Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy).

In Comedy TV Star of 2018, Jim Parsons is once again nominated for playing the hilariously awkward Dr Sheldon Cooper and hopefully he’ll win for what is now the last season of Big Bang Theory.

The Emmy winner, Donald Glover (of Atlanta fame) is nominated as well and joining him in this category is Kristen Bell (The Good Place) for the most underrated comedy show on television alongside Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Drew Barrymore (Santa Clarita Diet).

The film category of the PCA’s is drastically different to that of Oscars or Golden Globes and here summer blockbusters and comic book movies lead the way.

Movies of 2018 nominees include the two Marvel juggernauts: Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther. Other nominees include Incredibles 2, Fifty Shades Freed and A Quiet Place. Hardly any of these movies would ever make the Oscars or even Golden Globes list and yet the fans have spoken. It remains to be seen whether Marvel takes home the top honor or one of the other nominees wins.

Action Movie of 2018 is a very competitive category with Marvel movies competing against one another. Another movie in this category includes the adult action comic book adaptation Deadpool 2, which did exceptionally well at the box office. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is also in the list and closing the category is the all-female led Ocean’s 8, which certainly deserved a nod.

The acting nods for People’s Choice Awards 2018 are once again between the superheroes and fans will have a hard time deciding between their favorite superhero. The nominees are Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity War), Robert Downey Jr (Avengers: Infinity War), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Chris Pratt (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Nick Robinson (Love Simon).

In the Female Movie Star category, the competition is very stiff and the nominees are very good and difficult to vote for. They include fan favorite Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Infinity War), Sandra Bullock (Ocean’s 8), Anne Hathaway (Ocean’s 8), Lily James (Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom).

What does it mean?

There is a reason why the ratings of award shows have gone down dramatically in the last few years and this may be the reason. In an award show where up to 500 million people vote, their nominees are vastly different to that of the major award shows. Maybe the Emmys and Oscars should keep in mind the fans and that they should acknowledge some fan-favorites in various categories, if not all.
