Academy Award winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a true advocate for women’s rights. She is always putting forward issues that confront most women in Pakistan and her work is a shining example of this philosophy. The most recent news surrounding the filmmaker is that she will be speaking at the upcoming 8th Annual Women in the World New York Summit that is scheduled to take place from April 5 till April 7, 2017.

“I will be talking about the 80 per cent of women in Pakistan who have faced some sort of violence in their lives,” Obaid-Chinoy shared in a video message. “The stories that I’ll be bringing are about those women who have decided to stand up, speak out and change the reality in their community. My urgent call to action is that women can no longer wait for a seat to open up on the decision making table. They need to empower themselves, go out and ensure that they are the ones making decisions about their lives.”

Chinoy will be one of the speakers at the event alongside some other remarkable women. Apart from Hillary Rodham Clinton, this year’s Women in the World participants include actress Scarlett Johansson, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, writer/director Lena Dunham and Tony Award-winning performer and writer Sarah Jones, among many others.
