American television has, in a span of just a few years, become the go-to place for movie stars and acclaimed filmmakers, perhaps in a bid to creatively challenge themselves and break away from Hollywood’s eternal love affair with all things superheroes and sequels.

Plenty of mainstream Hollywood actors have found success on the small screen such as Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright (House of Cards), Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (True Detective). Others like Mark Wahlberg and David Fincher have thrived in the roles of producer and director respectively, also for small screen projects.

With that in mind, make way for a new David. O. Russell series that has the Internet talking. For the uninformed, Russell is the five-time Oscar nominee and the brain behind films like Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy.

Not much is known about the network that will air the limited series but the cast of course is enough to get us excited as Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore have agreed to star in the show.

This means in the coming months ahead, TV will play host to several movie stars such as Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman who will headline a new David E. Kelley series called Big Little Lies with Dallas Buyers Club’s Jean-Marc Vallée serving as director.

Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, two remarkable actors, will star in Jonathan Nolan and J.J Abrams’ upcoming TV production Westworld while 007 star Daniel Craig is starring in Showtime’s limited series Purity and Amy Adams will spearhead HBO’s Sharp Objects, which is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name.

Of course, the presence of an A-list actor or producer can’t guarantee success. The failure of Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese’ Vinyl and Steven Spielberg’s Halle Berry starrer Extant are key examples. Time will tell how the audience responds to this major casting coup of sorts.
