Singer-songwriter, humanitarian and education activist Shehzad Roy has many strengths as an artist. Though he’s made a big comeback with the eye-popping and enticing ‘Jind Jaan’ that woos us with its stars, cars and bad boy Roy, there is another music project featuring Roy that deserves as much attention if not more.

Moving away from dramatic flair of ‘Jind Jaan’ to something much more subversive is Roy’s latest effort: a musical anthem for the inaugural edition of Inter Provincial Games that took place in Islamabad earlier this week. The song ‘Bus Khel Nahi’ can be found on social media and has a beautiful video to go along with it. Directed by Faisal Qureshi, the video not only highlights all kinds of sports that are played but does it in a stylish manner.

The song serves as the official anthem to the Games that featured thousands of athletes from across the country and is meant to boost their profile and the games. In fact, during the opening ceremony, artists like Hadiqa Kiyani, Ali Zafar and Roy himself took to the stage and performed to a celebratory audience.

Speaking to Instep in a telephonic conversation from Singapore, Roy revealed his reason for doing the song and noted, “The idea is to create awareness for sports but do it in a way that’s interesting and engaging. In the video, we used a particular kind of camera called Phantom. It is often used in for slow-motion shots, and if you see the video, you’ll see what I mean. One of my favourite parts is of a girl doing this high jump….  We have to remember that we have other sports besides cricket.”

Well said, we couldn’t agree more.
