After a gap of a couple of month, Sub National-Immunisation anti polio campaign started on Monday, aiming to cover the persistently "refusal cases" in several areas of Karachi.
Commission Karachi Ejaz Ahmed Khan launched the drive by vaccinating the children at a maternity home in district south.
While talking to media, Commissioner Karachi said that during the last one year not a single case of polio has been reported in Karachi that shows the commitment of the health workers, their dedication and parents' resolve against the disease.
According to a spokesman of Emergency Polio Cell, the three-day campaign would be carried out in as many as 161 union councils of Karachi, targeting more than 1.8 million children.
More than 5000 police and Rangers personnel were deployed in different areas to ensure the safety of Polio Volunteers.
According to Spokesman of EOC, the main objective of this campaign is to focus on special refusal conversion activities in the high risk areas of Karachi.
The objective is to cover persistently missed children and sensitize the communities so that they may accept the oral polio vaccine on every time the campaign is launched.
A pilot activity was conducted first in District West in which 721/73% out of 983 persistently missed children have been covered so far.
With the success in district West the focus shifted to other districts and district Malir was the next one chosen by the EOC to target for covering PMC.
The first such intervention there took place in Landhi UC 1 and UC 2 where 433 out of 471 refusals were converted during Ramzan.
This was followed by conversion activities in Bin Qasim Town where again 295 refusals were converted in July. Similarly in district Central 570 persistently missed children have been covered across North Karachi, Liaqatabad and North Nazimabad towns.
Such activities not only convert those persistently missed children that are recorded but also give an opportunity to workers to register hidden refusals and bring them into the net of vaccination.
