FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirms re-election bid for March 2027
FIFA has confirmed that Gianni Infantino will stand for reelection next year
Gianni Infantino has confirmed he will seek another term in March 2027- which implies an election where multiple sides are actively fighting for the position.
The 56-year-old has been facing calls to step down following an attempted sale of a stake in FIFA tournaments to private investors.
He has refused to resign and he is likely to encounter an obstacle in the vote as he came under attack from FIFA vice presidents in Asia, Europe and North America.
A statement from the spokesperson reads: “The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”
European nations called off their planned boycott of FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that attempts to restrict access to the game would never happen again. The football governing body are spearheading a worldwide initiative to force Mr Infantino from power.
Infantino has used trips in weeks to underline how FIFA has raised necessary capital for an organization which has a vote carrying equal weight in the presidential election.
Additionally, Infantino's presence at the Women’s U20 World cup in Poland highlights a tense pause in negotiations.
