Lindsay Clancy trial ends in mistrial after jury fails to reach verdict

A judge has declared a mistrial in Lindsay Clancy's murder case after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict following seven days of deliberations.

Judge William Sullivan announced the decision on Friday after the defence's emergency appeal was denied.

The jury had told the court three times that it could not reach a unanimous decision.

"I'm going to declare that the jury is deadlocked and I'm going to declare a mistrial," Sullivan told the court.

The judge thanked jurors for their "incredible commitment" before formally discharging them.

Defence lawyer Kevin Reddington later told reporters that Clancy "deserved an acquittal." Asked about his client's condition, he said she was "not good."

Clancy's ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, has previously said he forgives her and believes mental illness was responsible for her actions.

In a statement released through his lawyer on Friday, he said "the prospect of reliving this tragedy through another trial is extraordinarily painful."

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said prosecutors would not immediately decide whether to pursue another trial.

He said public opinion would not affect the decision, adding that "this was and has always been about getting justice for those three little babies."
