Rockets 'fired' at German power plant by unknown attackers

Rockets described as "homemade" allegedly fired at the Turnow/Preilack substation near the Jänschwalde power plant in southern Brandenburg, a site nearly 160 kilometres away from Berlin.

According to dpa, the suspected attack on an electricity substation took place on Tuesday morning.

Currently unknown attackers hit more than once at the facility, and several explosive-laden devices were found in the site's vicinity.

With bomb disposal defusing each one in a timely manner, according to reports.

German authorities, meanwhile, are investigating the alleged attack on the power facility not simply through the angle of vandalism but reportedly as a deliberate attack on critical energy infrastructure.

The intentions behind the suspected attack — as the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung cited sources — were to knock out the power supply generated by the nearby Jänschwalde power plant.

Though no blackout was reported, various lines in the transmission network have been affected in the reported attack.

According to 50Hertz, the network operator, the damaged lines were quickly restored, and the supply of electricity is ongoing smoothly.

A spokesman of the company said, “50Hertz is working closely with the relevant security authorities to clarify the situation."

“We ask everyone in the entire network area to be especially vigilant. Please report any suspicious persons or incidents to the police," the statement read.
