5 things to know before reserving WhatsApp username
WhatsApp username reservations are rolling out, letting users secure unique handles and link them with Facebook and Instagram
WhatsApp has officially started rolling out username reservations, giving users an early chance to claim a unique handle before the feature launches more widely later this year.
If you've spotted the new invitation inside the app, it's worth understanding how the system works before locking in a username, especially since millions of people are competing for the same names.
How to reserve your WhatsApp username?
Users are now receiving a pop-up above the chat window asking them to create a username. The pop-up will go away after some time, but even if it does not show up, you can go to it via Settings > Account > Username > Create username.
Getting yourself a unique username might require several tries since WhatsApp has so many users. Popular usernames are bound to be claimed; thus, you could try including numbers or other characters, such as periods and underscores, in your chosen username.
Important things to note before receiving a WhatsApp username
One of the most significant new features includes the ability to link your WhatsApp profile to your Facebook and Instagram profile. This can be very beneficial for businesses, creators, and freelancers to maintain consistency on all three of Meta's networks.
On the other hand, account linking will mean sharing more data about yourself and your activities with Meta. People who cherish their privacy should consider this tradeoff before opting in.
Reserving your user name does not automatically replace your phone number. Anybody who currently knows your number will continue contacting you using it.
The username feature is likely to become popular among newly added contacts in the future after it becomes fully operational.
WhatsApp also allows the creation of a private key code which users will have to provide along with their username for security reasons.
Every username is not reservable. According to WhatsApp, usernames for celebrities, politicians, and other such public figures have been taken care of to avoid any impersonation issues.
If you later realise that the username you chose is not suitable for you, then you have the option to change it before it becomes fully available.
