How Amazon’s Bezos is using AI to reinvent Prime Video
Amazon seeks to restore its reputation in the AI industry
Jeff Bezos has noted that a high-profile platform can help demonstrate the hundreds of billions of dollars Amazon has invested in cognitive computing and artificial intelligence.
The executive chairman of Amazon has pushed Prime Video Mike Hopkins to renovate the streaming service so that AI is front and center.
Lighthouse resulting project
The resulting project, Lighthouse, would underscore Amazon’s AI capabilities for more than 200 million consumers, using Prime video. It is viewed as a significant piece in Amazon’s international efforts to enhance its prominence in artificial intelligence especially as rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic accelerate.
The company has committed some $200 billion to capital expenditures this year to develop AI and made an initial investment of $23 billion in OpenAI and Anthropic combined.
Lighthouse new features explained
Lighthouse expands new features that use AI to improve film and TV recommendations largely by learning consumer preferences and responding to specific requests.
Amazon is in the testing phase of various versions with a few users. Bezos has been deeply committed in the Prime Video overhaul including receiving occasional updates, which underlies the stakes for a company seeking to restore its reputation after struggling with subpar AI foundation models.
Amazon strengthened its dedication to entertainment in 2022 when it paid $85 billion to buy MGM, giving it access to prominent entertainment franchises, including James Bond.
Nonetheless, the service released a pivotal redesign in July 2024 to make it easier to identify what content is free and what costs more such as subscriptions to Paramount and TV shows.
