Why Norway star Erling Haaland uses Braut Haaland on his jersey

Norway striker Erling Haaland caught the attention of football fans during his FIFA World Cup debut, not only for his performance but also for the name displayed on the back of his shirt.

The Manchester City forward scored twice in Norway’s Group I match against Iraq on 16 June, helping his side make a strong start to the tournament.

However, many viewers were left wondering why his jersey read “Braut Haaland” instead of simply “Haaland”.

Haaland uses both family names on his Norway shirt as a tribute to his parents. “Braut” is his mother’s maiden name, while “Haaland” comes from his father.

His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a successful track and field athlete and competed as a heptathlete.

His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, enjoyed a professional football career and played in the Premier League for clubs including Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Manchester City.

The striker has often embraced both sides of his family background, and the decision to wear “Braut Haaland” on the international stage is seen as a nod to the sporting influence of both parents.

Widely regarded as one of the world's most prolific goalscorers, Haaland arrived at the World Cup after breaking several Premier League records, including becoming the youngest player to reach 50 and 100 goals in the competition.
