UEFA, CONCACAF demand $2.1B from FIFA reserves to challenge Infantino

The high-stakes political and financial standoff between UEFA, CONCACAF, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino centers on FIFA's massive cash reserves following the collapse of a controversial private equity proposal.

Aleksander Ceferin (UEFA) and Victor Montagliani (CONCACAF) sent a joint letter to Infantino demanding a $2.1 billion "one-off release" from FIFA's swelling reserves.

They are pushing for $10 million to be distributed directly to each of FIFA's 211 member associations for infrastructure and football development over the 2027–30 cycle.

As reported, the confederations argue that FIFA is on track to close out the 2023–26 financial cycle with roughly $6 billion in reserves—far more than necessary—meaning FIFA can easily afford these payouts using its own balance sheet without needing external investments.

This move is a direct counter-offensive against Infantino. It follows the fierce backlash and ultimate abandonment of FIFA's plan to sell a 20% stake in its commercial events (via a private equity group led by Joshua Kushner). 

UEFA and CONCACAF are intensifying pressure to challenge Infantino's leadership ahead of the upcoming FIFA presidential election.
