Justin Gaethje becomes undisputed UFC lightweight champion after Ilia Topuria quit on the stool at the end of round 4
Justin Gaethje vs Ilia Topuria fight match took place on Sunday held on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, to celebrate America's 250th anniversary and Donald Trump's 80th birthday.
At the UFC Freedom 250 event, Justin Gaethje defeated Ilia Topuria to secure the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion in a massive upset in MMA history.
Gaethje outcompeted Topuria via corner stoppage as Topuri’s corner stopped the fight at the end of the 4th round due to severe swelling around his eyes and heavy facial damage.
In the first round, the fight opened with a bloody brawl as both fighters landed heavy right hands. Topuria immediately revived himself and finished the round with brutal shots.
In the second round, Topuria targeted the midsection, flooring Gaethje with a left hook to the liver. The 3rd round proved to be a major shift for a challenger. Gaethje snapped Topuria’s head down and beat him badly with a right hand, brutally damaging Topuria's face.
However, the fourth round was decisive as Gaethje scrambled to his feet and landed strikes until the bell. On the contrary, Topuria’s corner failed to answer the bell and in this way, the victory was awarded to Gaethje.
In his post-fight interview, Gaethje expressed his emotions, “I’m from America. Two hundred and fifty years ago, we were way bigger than six-to-one underdogs, and look at this country now.”
“I knew I was going to have to get through the first round,” Gaethje said. “His skills are unmatched when he’s fresh and I’m fresh. But my durability, my tenacity and my heart were going to carry me through.”
“I’ve shown you why I’m the most consistent, most exciting guy that’s ever been in this cage. I am made for these moments.”
After pulling off the massive victory, Gaethje received congratulations from US President Donald Trump.
