Lewis Hamilton wins first Ferrari F1 race at Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix
Hamilton controlled the closing stages after Ferrari’s strategy call gave him the advantage over Russell
Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory since joining Ferrari with a major win at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion secured the 106th victory of his career after using fresher tyres and Ferrari’s pit strategy to move past George Russell.
The win was Hamilton’s first since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, when he was still driving for Mercedes, and marked a major breakthrough in his Ferrari career.
Russell finished second after leading much of the race, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a dramatic late retirement.
Antonelli had overtaken his Mercedes teammate Russell earlier in the race and looked set to continue his remarkable run of form before his car broke down with only four laps remaining.
The Italian driver had entered the Spanish Grand Prix on the back of five consecutive race wins and remains the Formula 1 championship leader despite failing to finish.
Hamilton controlled the closing stages after Ferrari’s strategy call gave him the advantage over Russell during the final round of pit stops.
The victory also strengthens Ferrari’s momentum in the title race as Hamilton continues to settle into the team following his high-profile switch from Mercedes.
