Scottie Scheffler has rare on-course meltdown at Memorial Tournament
Scottie Scheffler, who has won the tournament for the past two years, reacted angrily after an approach shot bounced into a hazard
World number one Scottie Scheffler showed rare frustration during the opening round of the Memorial Tournament after a shot he believed was well struck ended up in the water.
Scheffler, who has won the tournament for the past two years, reacted angrily after an approach shot bounced into a hazard during Thursday’s round.
After the shot, Scheffler was heard telling his caddie Ted Scott: "I don't know what to do."
As he walked away from the tee, he added: "That was a good shot. Now I'm in the water."
Broadcast microphones later picked up more of the conversation as Scheffler continued venting his frustration over the windy conditions.
"Absolutely flushed a 7-iron, and we get the wind wrong, and I'm in the water," Scheffler said.
"I don't think you understand how frustrating that is. That was a good shot. It really was."
The American golfer later added: "I don't understand what I'm meant to do. I don't understand. I really don't."
Scheffler ended the exchange by saying: "I'm hitting good shots, and dropping from hazards. I cannot get the wind right."
The difficult moment summed up a frustrating opening day for Scheffler, who finished his first round at one-over par.
Despite the shaky start, Scheffler remains one of the favourites to contend at the Memorial Tournament as he attempts to win the event for a third consecutive year.
