Ex-Oilers and Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell retires from hockey to pursue life coaching

Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell has announced he is stepping away from professional hockey after an eight-season NHL career.

In a video shared on Instagram, the 34-year-old reflected on his time in the league and the challenges he faced away from the ice.

"I grew up my entire life chasing one dream, and that was to play in the NHL," Campbell said in the video.

"I was fortunate enough to accomplish that goal, playing eight seasons in the NHL and becoming an NHL all-star. Frankly, on paper, (I was) living a pretty awesome life.

"Super grateful for my days of playing, but what a lot of people don't see is the personal battle I went through throughout my career."

In the caption accompanying the post, Campbell confirmed he was leaving the sport.

"Walking away from hockey wasn't easy. It gave me more than I could have ever imagined. But over the last few years, I realized the work that brought me the most fulfillment wasn't stopping pucks — it was helping people become who they're capable of becoming," he wrote, adding that he plans to become a life coach.

Campbell last played in the NHL during the 2023-24 season and spent time with the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Maple Leafs and Oilers, finishing his NHL career with a .909 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average across 176 games.
