Matisse Thybulle joins Lakers on one-year deal after leaving Trail Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed a one-year, $3.3 million contract with free agent Matisse Thybulle, according to ESPN.

The 28-year-old forward reportedly chose the Lakers after discussions with head coach JJ Redick and star guard Luka Doncic, who outlined the team's plans for him and his role in strengthening the squad's perimeter defence.

According to ESPN, Thybulle is a two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection and shot 41.8 percent from three-point range over the past two seasons, despite appearing in only 45 games.

ESPN Research also reported that he led the league in steals and deflections per 36 minutes last season among players who appeared in at least 20 games.

Thybulle, who is entering his eighth NBA season, had discussions about returning to the Portland Trail Blazers, but sources told ESPN that the franchise did not make a strong effort to keep him, offering non-guaranteed contracts for much of free agency.

The Lakers also explored a sign-and-trade agreement with Portland that could have increased Thybulle's salary, but the two teams were unable to reach a deal.

The signing gives the Lakers 16 players on guaranteed contracts.

According to ESPN, the club is expected to continue exploring trade options before the NBA season begins in October.
