Five killed in China mine collapse days after tragic Shanxi mine disaster that claimed 90 lives
The latest mining accident occurred just days after a devastating coal mine disaster in Shanxi killed 90 people, renewing concerns over mine safety in China
A latest tragic news report reveals a mine shaft collapse during an illegal mining operation in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province has killed five people and injured one, state media reported on Sunday.
State news agency Xinhua reported the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday in Yunnan's Huize County.
There was only one survivor out of six people rescued from the site and sent to hospital, Xinhua said, and the person was in stable condition.
The accident comes just days after the country suffered its deadliest mining disaster in over a decade that left nearly 90 dead.
Authorities have immediately launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, which follows the May 22 deadly gas explosion at a coal mine in the northern Shanxi Province and has drawn intense scrutiny due to its timing.
Chinese authorities last week vowed a thorough investigation into the Shanxi disaster, as preliminary findings uncovered unmarked tunnels, missing trackers, and fake doors at the mining site.
Apart from the 82 people killed, two remain missing and 128 were injured.
Some authorities are also linking the coal mine blast to a criminal act.
Notably, the report updated the death toll. However, it did not specify details about what minerals were being mined there.
