Meghan Markle under fire for tone deaf remarks on 1992 L.A. riots: ‘Cinematic’
Meghan Markle received scathing criticism for remarks on historic Los Angeles unrest
Meghan Markle has landed in trouble over her remarks on 1992 Los Angeles riots, which she described as “cinematic” in a new interview.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar interview, the Duchess of Sussex reflected on her memories as an 11-year-old.
She recalled smoke, looters, and ash falling like snow, calling the city “resilient,” and prompting immense backlash.
"It was cinematic in a way I don't think many people can understand... it was so visual. Smoke everywhere," Meghan said.
She added, "People were driving around with the back of their SUVs open. I saw people running with boxes of diapers, smashed windows, so much fire and ash falling from the sky that it felt like snow."
Prince Harry's wife described the city as "resilient," saying, "It was scary, but L.A. survived it."
The interview did not sit well with residents and commentators, who argue that framing the deadly unrest as a visual spectacle is tone-deaf and self-focused.
"She acts like seeing a few looters carrying diapers makes her a war survivor with PTSD – like some kind of veteran. It's a joke and shameful,” a LA source said.
They added, "People died. Neighborhoods burned. For anyone really there it wasn't a movie scene – it was people's lives."
One resident told Radar Online, "She says the ashes 'felt like snow.' We lost half the city. Who talks liked this?"
"Meghan didn't grow up in no ghetto – someone needs to tell her she didn't live through Boyz n the Hood!" another lashed out at Meghan.
