King Charles receives historic invitation after announcing US state visit
King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla will visit the US later this month
King Charles has received a historic invitation after the monarch announced to visit US with wife Queen Camilla.
King Charles has received the invitation to address the U.S. Congress on April 28 during his visit to Washington.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has extended the invitation to King Charles.
Charles and his wife Queen Camilla will visit the U.S. in a long-planned trip to mark the 250th anniversary of that country's independence from British rule, before they pay a visit to Bermuda, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday.
Sharing the invitation on X, formerly Twitter handle, Mike Johnson tweeted, “It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite His Majesty King Charles III, The King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to address a Joint Meeting of Congress.”
He further said, “Our two nations share one of the most consequential partnerships in history, and together we will mark the historic milestone of America’s 250th year of independence.”
According to the Reuters, it will be the first state visit by a British monarch since 2007, when Charles' mother Queen Elizabeth made what was the fourth such U.S. trip of her reign.
Queen Elizabeth had also addressed the joint meeting of the congress in 1991.
Trump said the king and queen's visit would begin on April 27 with a banquet dinner at the White House the next day.
