Prince Harry's planned return to the UK has sparked renewed debate.

Royal commentator Richard Eden has claimed that the Duke of Sussex may be attempting to strengthen his case for tax-payer funded police protection.

On the Palace Confidential podcast, the royal expert suggested that Harry and Meghan Markle's reported accommodation preferences for an upcoming visit could be part of a broader strategy linked to the long-running security dispute.

Speaking with co-host Richard Kay, Eden said, "Frankly, this all seems like a bit of a trap."

"Harry and Meghan said they will stay at a royal residence only if each time they leave with their children, they are guaranteed security," he added.

Eden claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "putting the King and government in a position where in the future they can say, this is what we expect every time and indeed, if we have it in Britain, we should get it in America as well."

"There's a lot of manipulation going on and it's all quite unedifying," he noted.

This comes as Prince Harry is expected to visit the UK in connection with the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, reports indicate that details of the trip remain uncertain, including whether Meghan and their children will accompany him.

For those unaware, the Duke of Sussex has been engaged in a years-long legal battle over his UK security. In May 2025, he lost his appeal challenging the Home Office's decision not to provide him with automatic taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping back as a working royal.
