A series of major earthquakes jolted Scottish Highlands on Monday, October 20, 2025.

As reported by Daily record, Perthshire was hit by three  back to back earthquakes within a difference of just few minutes, with residents fearing an explosion.

The British Geological experts confirmed that Residents were shaken up in their homes after a 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit the hamlet of Pubil in Scotland.

According to the Geological survey, the epicenter of the quake recorded a depth of 3km near Loch Lyon in Perth and Kinross region.

The village of Killin, near the western end of Loch Tay, experienced the strongest shaking, though the British Geological Survey (BGS) also received reports of the event being felt as far away as Inverness and Edinburgh.

Moreover, the Volcano Discovery website which compiles data of geological events across the world, confirmed that people living almost 50 miles away reported a weak shaking in their homes too.

Residents were terrified as they reportedly heard a “low rumbling sound” with some thinking “there had been an explosion."

Others stated that their home started to shake and the doors “rattled."

Moments later, the same area was hit by a 1.4 magnitude tremor and a 1.2 magnitude quake few minutes after.

One Scottish resident posted online, "House shuddered accompanied by low rumbling sound for two, three second tremors separated by about one second"

"Something fell over in the loft and a small round garden lamp fell off a window sill," reports another resident.

Residents in Callander, Tyndrum, and Grandtully also reported about hearing and feeling the earthquake, reports BBC.

According to geological reports there are roughly 300 earthquakes in Britain every year, but the vast majority are so small that no one notices them.

However, between 20-30 earthquakes reported are over 2.0 magnitude which can be felt over a wider area.

The largest known Scottish earthquake occurred near Loch Awe in 1880, with a magnitude of 5.2.

Furthermore, the most damaging earthquake in UK was in the Colchester area that occurred in 1884 when more than 1200 buildings were damaged.

According to geological experts, earthquakes in Scotland are most often attributed to glacial rebound.

Until about 10,500 years ago much of the northern side of the UK was covered by a thick layer of ice - which pushed the rocks down into the underlying mantle.

These rocks have been slowly rising back up ever since the ice melted, causing occasional earthquakes in the process.

In addition to that, Scotland has been battered by more than 4,000 earthquakes in the past 50 years.

Based on the data from the past 55 years since 1900, the Volcano discovery's official site reports that there are about 43 quakes on average per year in Scotland, UK.
