Patricia Routledge ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ iconic star dies at 96

Keeping Up Appearances star Patricia Routledge who was known for playing iconic character Hyacinth Bucket in the sitcom from 1990 to 1995, has died at the age of 96.

The news of the legendary actress’ death was announced by Routledge’s agent in a statement, "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love.”

"Even at 96-years old, Dame Patricia's passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles,” the statement read.

The statement added: "She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world."

She played BBC One’s amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp and also starred in Alan Bennett’s TV monologues.

Dame Patricia rose to fame as an iconic actress by playing Hyacinth Bucket, pronounced as “bouquet.” The sitcom Keeping Up Appearances was a highly acclaimed hit which garnered not only 13 million viewership but also earned the actor national acclaim.

"She's an absolute monster and I enjoyed playing her enormously," the actress said about the character. 

After accomplishing success in London’s West End, Patricia carved her success in the US when she won the Tony Award for best lead actress in a musical on Broadway in New York for Darling of the Day in 1968.

In her 80s era, she became a true national tv star with iconic roles, for which she received a Bafta nomination.

Her exceptional performance in Keeping Up Appearances also earned her two Bafta nominations.

Her significant contributions were recognized with an OBE in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and a dame in 2017.
